Grand Prix 1 – Crowborough

Crowborough Grand Prix, 17th September 2016

The new season opened in style with 96 in the four SJC junior sections, joined in the impressive playing hall by a further 41 players in the 31st Crowborough Adult Congress.

In the Under 11 Minors, the arbiters reported high standards of play and concentration, although the players had to be reminded to slow down as some early games were played at top speed!  Congratulations to Sophie a deserved winner with 5.5 points Joining her in moving up to the Under 11 Majors will be Elliott and Henry, both on 5 out of 6. A very good day for girls, Sophie also won the Crowborough Cup for the top performance by a Crowborough Junior and consistent play saw Amelie, Lauren, and Lucy H secure the Under 7, Under 10 and Top Girl trophies respectively.

The U11 Major remains a tough place to be with no easy games to be had. For those who have just moved up from the U11 Minors, please don’t be downhearted if you haven’t won many games as you will have played more experienced opponents and will learn from these encounters.  The title was won by Adam just ahead of Callum V on progressives. Adam, not yet 8, will now head to the Under 18 Majors at Horsham and on this evidence will be well up to the challenge. Elizabeth pipped Matthew A and Thomas D to 3rd place on progressives, though Matthew had the consolation of winning the Under 9 trophy.

(Note : we are often asked what winning on progressives means. A player’s progressive score is the sum of his scores going in to each round. This system rewards players who win more games in earlier rounds as they can then expect to have had a tougher tournament playing more highly ranked players).

The Under 18 Minor section featured a number of impressive displays from players who have only just moved up from the Under 11s or who are fairly new to completive chess. Lilya took first place unbeaten on 5 out of 6. Half a point behind her, Daniel L and Karam shared 2nd place. Ben and Jamie won Grading Prizes.

The Under 18 Majors was missing a few of the usual faces, with Callum, Calum, Daniel, David, Freddie, Lucy, Matthew F and Thomas all entering the Adult Congress. Even so the competition still included a number of England players in the field. Well done to Gurveen, one of the out-of-county regulars, who progressed unbeaten to 5.5 to take the title ahead of Jonathan on 5 points, just ahead of Edward and Batuhan who shared 3rd place. Grading prizes were won by Alex, Eryl, Max, Oliver M, Oliver F and Nishchal, who also scooped Top Under 8 for his performance in this tough section.

At the end of last season we awarded our prestigious Bruce Diennes awards – two winners were unable to be present at that time so were belatedly presented with their awards: congratulations to Stevie Clark and Matthew Finn.

Finally, thanks to all the parents for supporting the children throughout the highs and lows of the day.

Thanks also to the tournament helpers :

We hope to see many of you back to compete again – our next Grand Prix is on October 15th where the sections will be slightly different – Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, and Under 18. Look out also for our age-limited tournaments for the Under 8s (Oct 29th), the Under 9s, Under 11s, Under 13s and Under 18s (Nov 13th) and the Girls Tournament (4th Dec). These events additionally include team prizes where there are three or more players from the same school.

Finally, we are a voluntary organisation and can always use extra pairs of hands, either at events or handling administration behind the scenes. Please speak to an organiser if you would like to get more involved.
