Sussex vs Hampshire, 6th October 2001
Following the under 8 championship, the Under 14 (under 90 grade) team put up an fantastic display in disposing of Hampshire in the Southern Counties Chess Union competition by the largest margin ever for a Sussex Team. In the first round, not a single game was lost, and the three draws resulted in a 10½ – 1½ win to Sussex. The second round was nearly as successful, with one loss and two draws, giving a total of 10 – 2. The overall result of Sussex 20½ – Hampshire 3½ puts Sussex in a very strong position to qualify for the final and retain their trophy.
Commiserations to Hampshire who were clearly troubled by their late arrival, and were not prepared for the very experienced Sussex Team. I’m sure they will post markedly better results as their young team matures.
