Horsham Tournament

66 players turned-up to compete in the four sections (Under 11 Major and Minor and Under 18 Major and Minor).

The Under 18 Major was extremely hard fought. A measure of this can be seen in that the winner Charlie Linford ‘only’ scored 4 ½ points. Charlie had to recover after a first round defeat by Adam Prescott, in the end though a draw in the final round against runner-up Lakshman Ruthirapathy was enough to seal victory. Adam could not capitalize on his start and finished 3rd on 3 ½ points.

The Under 18 Minor, playing for the new trophy for this section, fell to Mithun Kailavasan from Pinner with 5 ½ points. James Guiney from Epsom Downs was second on 5, and in third place winning a Sussex trophy for the very first time after many years of trying was James May on 4 ½.

The Under 11 Major saw what can be achieved in a year of playing chess in Sussex. Farris Ziyada won the Under 11 Minor in 2000 at this event, this year he returned and took the Major with 5 points. Not bad for an Under 9. Gajern Kailavasan completed a great family day out with second on 4 ½. Christopher Linnett also scored 4 ½ for third place, remaining unbeaten with 3 draws in rounds 1-3, and 3 wins in 4-6.

The Under 11 Minor fell to Nicholas Thorne, who will be promoted to the Major at Hastings in January. His 5 ½ was very well earned. Second, in her best ever Tournament performance was Jessica Wood with 5, with Simon Tucker third on 4 ½.

The Best Under 7 was William Maskell (4), Under 8 Ben Blundell (3 ½), Under 9 Alex Vine (4), and Under 10 James Arnold (4 ½). All were from the U11 Minor. Worthy of praise was Patrick Butler from Reading who scored 3 ½ from the Major but lost out on the Under 8 prize on progressive score.
