Sussex Martlets 4NCL Teams

The Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) is a team tournament over three divisions, with over 850 players taking part and almost £10,000 in cash prizes on offer. Their website claims “it
is the most prestigious team chess event held in the United Kingdom”!

Sussex Junior Chess sponsors 3 mixed-age teams captained by ex-Sussex junior Rhys Cumming assisted by Will Graham, Tim Woods and Sue Howell. Players are drawn from SJC’s older juniors and associated adults. The objective is to develop our older juniors with exposure to FIDE rated longplay.

The 1st team play in Division 2; the 2nd team in Division 3 South; and the 3rd team play in Division 4.

Sussex Martlets 1 – Division 2

Division 2 has two parallel pools of 8 teams, designed to be of roughly equal strength.

Over the first 7 rounds Sussex Martlets play all the other teams in their pool. After round 7, the pools are reformed with the top 4 teams from both pools going into a Championship Pool, and the bottom four going into a Demotion Pool.

Sussex came 7th in their initial pool so unfortunately found themselves in the Demotion Pool:

 However, having carried forward 2 wins against White Rose 2 and Barbican Youth, the team finished strongly with 4 wins to finish top of the Demotion Pool:

Sussex Martlets 2 – Division 3 South

Division 3 South has two parallel pools of 8 teams.

Over the first 7 rounds Sussex Martlets will play all the other teams in their pool. After round 7, the pools are reformed with the top 4 teams from both pools going into a Championship Pool, and the bottom four going into a Demotion Pool.

Like Sussex Martlets 1, the team found themselves in the Demotion Pool:

However, after strong performances in the last weekend against Anglian Avengers 2 and The Full Ponty they managed to finish in 3rd place, safe from relegation.
