ECGCF South East Zonal (10 Feb 01)
A depleted Sussex under 14’s girls team showed great spirit, but was unable to overcome the loss of their board 3 to qualify for the final of the ECGCF (English Counties Girls Chess Federation) team championship. Many thanks go to Abi Fryer who had to step in at the last moment to cover for Eleanor Hayden. The event was predictably won by the strong team from Surrey with 16 points out of a possible 18, having surprisingly been in only second place at the end of the first round. Second place went to Kent after a nail biting last round which saw them finish ½ a point ahead of Middlesex. Sussex were fourth with 6½ points and Essex fifth with 3.
