Southwater Tournament

Sussex Young master Charlie Linford won the under 18 section of the Southwater tournament today. Despite slipping up against James Purcell in round 5, Charlie managed to hold off the younger Sussex pretenders and won with 5 out of 6. In a hotly contested section, second to fourth place was taken by Sussex under 9 Sebastian Pozzo, James Purcell and Michael Hamilton, each with 4½ out of 6. Sebastian was adjudged second and James third on the sum of progressive scores.

The under 11 major section had its fair share of surprises, with some unexpected losses and draws for the main contenders. In the end three players ended on 4 out of 6, with James Asquith first, Joe Richardson second and Stephanie Barraclough third. The moral from this group is never give up until the last game has finished!

Hampshire junior Eugene Geidelberg won the under 11 minor section with 5 out of 6, closely pursued by one of the top Sussex under 9’s, Andrew Tucker on the same score. The most notable performance however was from Katherine Rattle with 4½ out of 6 coming third, and managing to take a point off Eugene. With Hannah Adam fourth on 4, the two Sussex girls outshone some of the more experienced boys.
