In a day of mixed fortunes, a 24 strong team of mixed ages came fourth in a friendly match at Sutton. The team was made up of 8 under14’s, 8 under 11’s and 8 under 9’s, playing against the strongest teams in the London area, Richmond, Barnet and Wey Valley. The first round was a great success, where Sussex beat Wey Valley by 15½ to 8½. The second round was one we would probably rather forget, as we lost 21½ – 2½ to Richmond. The two wins against significantly stronger opposition from Tom Poulson and James Asquith deserve commendation. In the last round against Barnet, we needed to score at least 8 points to avoid coming bottom, but unfortunately failed by ½. Congratulations especially to Tom who had the distinction of scoring 3 out of 3.
However, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all taking part, and we must thank the organiser David Heaton for his efforts.
