Crowborough Tournament

Crowborough Junior tournament (18-Sep-99)

For the first time the Crowborough Junior Championship was held in three sections. Under 18, Under 11 major and minor. This proved a great success, particularly with the younger players in the minor competition as they did not have to play against the more experienced players, normally a guaranteed loss and dispiriting experience.

First place in the highly competitive under 18 competition was jointly taken by two under 11’s, both members of Crowborough Club, Nick Campion and David Barraclough. Nick took the title on the sum of progressive scores, but both shared the Crowborough Town Council cup as members of the local club. Up until the last round, it had looked as if Edmund Birkenshaw from Kent was going to take the honours having beaten all the other contenders, but he tripped up against England player Theo Penty, who had managed to lose an early game and saved his best for last!

The very first under 11 major winner of a Sussex tournament was Kendrick De Nazareth from Kent, with a score of 5½/6. Second was local under 10 Joe Richardson, followed by Danny Glebocki.

The Under 11 minor section was won by Sussex Under 10 player Guy Willis, with under 9 Andrew Tucker second. Both would likely have struggled in the senior section, and it was great to see their delight at having won at the end. Particular mention should be made of the third placed player Rupert Quiney, scoring 5 out of 6 in his first proper tournament.
