Eastbourne Grand Prix, 4th February 2017
St Catherine’s College (previously Bishop Bell School) once again provided an excellent venue for the tournament, with 117 entries comfortably accommodated in the school hall. The penultimate grand prix of the season makes for a very exciting competition; with players selected to the Sussex teams jostling for position in the board order plus all to play for in the overall Grand Prix, especially in all the sections from under 8 through to under 14 with many players still in with a chance of finishing in the top three.
The quality of chess was epitomised by the three strong candidates for ‘performance of the day’ – with performances way ahead of the new ECF grades (released only last week) required to win their sections from Ben (+62), Javier (+50) and Solomon (+47).
As usual, the U11 Minor was the largest section and as some U11 team players had migrated to the Major there were opportunities to shine. This resulted in a very closely fought contest. A great improvement from Javier Gomez proved enough to win the title with a very impressive 5.5 out of 6. Liam, Lauren and Stevie followed on 5 points, with the progressive tie-break ensuring that Liam and Lauren get the dubious benefit of promotion to the Under 11 majors for the final Grand Prix of the season at Worthing.
In the tough U11 Major tournament, Solomon played his best tournament with a key victory over Callum in round five enough to secure victory with a perfect 6 out of 6. It was good to see three of our under 11 Girls team at the top with Ruby securing third place with 4.5 and Elena and Sophie following closely on 4. Well done also to Ayden for an impressive 4 points in his first major tournament.
One of the pleasures of the Eastbourne Grand Prix was maintained with the welcome presence of a strong contingent from Darvell with 11 players, including 6 in the Under 18 Minor. Again this competition was a very closely fought contest. Ben secured the title with his +62 grading performance closely followed by Angus in second. No fewer than 6 players shared third place, notably Julian on his welcome return to SJC events and Caleb with the top Darvell performance.
Finally to the U18 Major section with a number of exciting and close finishes. There were a series of exciting games particularly from the four England players who disputed the main prizes. The benefits of reading chess books were clearly illustrated as a tactic remembered from Murray Chandler’s ‘Chess tactics for kids’ book secured a victory for Thomas over Calum in one of those games, That set up a showdown with Amardip, who ruthlessly capitalised on an early mistake from Thomas with a strong and successful attack to secure the title, There was a particularly notable performance from Timmy – still an under 9 – who followed the four England players in fifth place.
We now wish our Under 9, Under 11 and Under 11 Girls teams all the best as they compete in the EPSCA tournaments before our next Grand Prix in Worthing. Finally, thanks to all the parents for supporting the children throughout the highs and lows of the day, and our tournament helpers:
- Tournament Control – Andy, Bernard, Bunesh, Dominic, Gary, Jonathan, Mike, Peter, Rasa and Chaski.
- Balvinder, Caroline, Debbie, Jane and Keith for maintaining the high standards of SJC catering
- Dave for running the training sessions
- Andy, Anita, Martin and Sandra for the many tasks it takes to make an event happen including registrations, entries, and photography
