Horsham Grand Prix, 13th November 2016
108 players made the journey to another hospitable new venue at Forest School as we reach the half way point in the 2016-17 Grand Prix season. Players appreciated the extra space in the playing hall, and helpers appreciated not having to carry tables up and down the stairs to the playing hall!
The U11 Minor section was hotly contested with a good mixture of age and experience, and no fewer than 46 players. It was encouraging to see 13 girls in this section. Maxwell Kendall scored a superb 6/6 to take the first place trophy, with a three way tie for second place as Sara Enache, Theo Hall and Eloise Kay all finished on 5 points. All 4 will be promoted to the U11 Major section where they will find there are no easy games.
In the U11 Major tournament there were many long and close fought games. Elizabeth fought back from a first round defeat to Thomas, to take first place, earning promotion to the Under 18 Major. Theo Lawson showed the benefits SJC should reap from his move to Brighton, as he took second place ahead of Callum in third. Girls were also well represented in this section – led by Sophie who clinched the Top Girl prize with 4 points, and we hope that many of them will play in our Girls’ Championship at Burgess Hill Girls on December 4th.
A number of players chose to take the extra challenge of playing in the major sections, and fully justified the brave step – notably Ben with an impressive 4 in his first under 11 major competition and Alex and Daniel with strong performances in the under 18 section. It was also good to see a different set of players at the head of the Under 18 minor section with Isaac just ahead of Max on progressives, and Leah and Matthew sharing third place.
Finally to the U18 Major section, one of the largest we’ve had with 31 players, including no fewer than 10 England players. A strong section, with very few quick games, as Batuhan and Thomas shared first place, just ahead of Lucy and Henry.
