Sussex Closed Girl’s U11 & U18 Championships, Burgess Hill School, 4th December 2016
The 2016 Sussex Girls championships brought together 44 girls to contest the U11 and U18 titles in separate sections.
The U18 section saw a good turnout from the host school with no fewer than 6 players, several new to tournament chess. A close fought game between Lilya and Polina in round 3 resulted in a draw and both girls went into the last round unbeaten For Polina, a quick win gave her the U18 title, whereas a draw meant Lilya took 2nd place, with Felicia just behind on progressives in third. Leah took the Under 14 title with 3 points.
The U18 team trophy returned to Burgess Hill Girls having been won by the school team each year from 2010 to 2014.
In U11 section four schools were able to field teams of at least 3 players and the results were very close, with all to play for going into the final round. Lydia led Rocks Park to victory just half a point ahead of Birchwood Grove. Joint third were Blackboys and Copthorne Prep. In a 3 player team, every point counted and some of these girls were playing in their first Sussex tournament so well done to all participants.
There were some remarkably long games in this section, often outlasting the U18s. Again, the title was dependent on the last game, with Elena, an under 9, and Elizabeth, the defending champion, agreeing a draw to share first place with 4.5 points. Half a point behind, Grace took 3rd place on progressives, also unbeaten. Among those playing today there were some new names including several U8s and U9s which bodes well for the Sussex U11 girls team in future years.
Our thanks to Sussex and England U16 Cassie Graham for her help. Cassie, who mentors our U11 Girls Team, spent the day going through games and dispensing support and advice.
As always thanks to Anita for entries, our catering team (Caroline Debbie and Keith) for sustaining such a large number of people with the good cheer that they always show, festive season or not, and the tournament team (Brian, Carol, Catherine, Gary and Trevor). Also to Sandra for her party organisation and all the parents who provided items for the party tea and raffle. The girls emerged from prize giving just in time to join the party.
