120 Sussex children made their way to Downloads School to compete for the Sussex U9, U11, U13 and U18 rapid play titles. This event is an important one as the Sussex U9 and U11 team selectors are talent spotting for the team events upcoming in the Spring term. It also has the added attraction of a school team element (3 players needed) meaning there is lots to play for.
The U9 section had a strong entry of 42, although this year only 2 school teams. Birchwood Grove and Windlesham both entered the last round with all to play for on 7 points. Two wins from Cody and Oliver in the last round proved just enough for a half point victory. The individual competition proved equally close, with four players finishing on 5 out of 6. Timmy, with wins in his first five games, secured first place on the progressive tie-break ahead of newcomer Joseph and Matthew in third. Elena secured the top girl’s prize with an impressive last round victory over Timmy.
Over to the U11 section where there was some very serious chess played with several players aspiring to selection to the National Junior squad this year. All credit to Alec completing a family double with a perfect 6, ahead of Giovanni, Xavier and Alistair all finishing on 5 points. A point behind Elizabeth secured the top girl trophy. Again the schools competition went to the final round. Broadwater entered the last round with a 2 point lead, but slipped to 3 defeats in the final round, which enabled Birchwood Grove to take their second title by the same half point margin.
The under 13 competition included six England players, and the standard of chess did not disappoint. An unbeaten Amardip progressed serenely to victory a point ahead of Oli, Michael and Daniel. Lucy, the latest SJC player to join the national squad, celebrated with the top girl prize. Sadly no school managed the three players required for a school team.
In the under 18 competition, an impressive six players secured the school title for Lancing In the individual event, an unbeaten 5.5 points saw Thomas to the title, won in 2014 by brother Jonathan. Dominic and Matthew took second and third, ahead of Mikolaj and Oliver who took the grading prizes. A double success for Ice, who added the top girl prize to her team medal.
