Despite the sub-zero temperatures, 104 players made the journey to Farlington School as we reach the half way point in the 2015-16 Grand Prix season. Sussex Juniors were joined by players from the nearby counties of Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and Hertfordshire. Thanks to Farlington School for the hospitality at this excellent venue.
The U11 Minor section was hotly contested with a good mixture of age and experience, and no fewer than 46 players. It was encouraging to see 14 girls in this section. Solomon Mitchell, in his first season with SJC, scored a superb 6/6 to take the first place trophy. Matthew Armstrong (under 8) was second with 5 points and third place was decided on progressives, with James Walker just edging out the other 5 on 4.5 points. These 3 will be promoted to the U11 Major section where they will find there are no easy games. Grace Lamb was unbeaten and took the Top Girl trophy. There were some strong and determined performances all the way through the field, with some of the newcomers playing out the longest games of the day. Most of the day’s prize winners started their careers at the lower end of the tournament, so please persevere if that happened to you.
In the U11 Major tournament there were many long and close fought games. Oliver Faulkner was unbeaten and took first place, earning promotion to the Under 18 Major. Xavier took second place, while Polina and Thomas shared third. Timmy did well to score 4 points and win the Under 8 trophy. Girls were also well represented in this section and we hope that many of them will play in our Girls’ Championship at Burgess Hill Girls on December 6th.
It was great to see the return of Indy in the Under 18 Minor, sharing 3rd place with Max, Dominic W and Oliver F. Just half a point ahead of them Bridie, one of our visitors from Surrey, took 2nd place and Harry Clark, with 5/6 won the first place shield, and secured promotion to the majors for the next Grand Prix in Hastings. A strong performance by Ryan secured the under 70 grading prize.
Finally to the U18 Major section, one of the largest we’ve had with 25 players, including no fewer than 8 England players. A strong section, with very few quick games, and Under 12s Calum and Amardip took first and second places with Dominic M in third. Jonathan and Gurveen shared the U130 grading prize and Michael Banks won the U110 prize.
