103 players made the journey to St Mary Star of the Sea School in Hastings, a tournament timed to coincide with its big brother – the prestigious Hastings International Chess Congress. Sussex Juniors were joined by players from the ‘neighbouring’ counties of Essex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Oxfordshire and Surrey.
The highlight of the day for most Juniors was the presence of David Howell offering advice in the training room and presenting the prizes, David is the youngest chess Grandmaster in the United Kingdom, a title he earned when he came second during the 35th Rilton Cup in Stockholm on 5 January 2007 when he was just 16. David is Sussex born and bred and not so long ago a Sussex Junior himself.
The U11 Minor section was hotly contested with a good mixture of age and experience, and no fewer than 45 players. The strength of the out of county visitors saw Suyash and Conrad take the first two places, ahead of Thomas and Elena both scoring a creditable 5 points. The top 3 earn promotion to the Under 11 Majors for the Grand Prix in Eastbourne. There were some strong and determined performances all the way through the field. Most of the day’s prize winners started their careers at the lower end of the tournament, so please persevere if that happened to you. In the tough U11 Major tournament, Nishchal (a very talented under 8 from Middlesex) scored 5.5 to finish ahead of Polina and Giovanni.
The Under 18 Minor competition was a very closely fought contest, with six players sharing second place (Bridie, Kieron, Matthew, Oliver joined by Indie and Oscar making a welcome return to SJC events. . An excellent display from Max with 5.5 points secured the title and with it promotion to the majors for the next Grand Prix.
Finally to the U18 major section, where spectators gathered round to witness some of the exciting attacking chess fitting for a section including 6 current England squad members, including Batuhan the latest SJC qualifier . Thomas narrowly edged Amardip into second place on progressives, ahead of a four way tie between Rajeiv, Jonathan B, Jonathan F and Gurveen, A very strong display from Leo in his first major, secured the grading prize.
Finally, thanks to all the parents for supporting the children throughout the highs and lows of the day, and our tournament helpers :
- Entries and reception – Sandra
- Training Room – Chris, David and Jude
- Tournament Control – Brian, Catherine, Con, Gary.Jonathan, Peter and Tom
