The very first Sussex Girls Congress was considered a great success by all who took part and organised it. Three visitors from outside the county took part in the Champions section with Aly Wilson from Surrey winning the tournament with a perfect 5 out of 5. The two Sussex titles at under 11 and 18 were a repeat of last year, with Lizzie Tippetts taking the under 18’s with 3/5, and Stephanie Barraclough the under 11’s with 3½ out of 5. There was also a very promising performance from under 9 Eleanor Hayden with 3/5.
The larger challengers section was won outright by Katherine Rattle with an excellent 5½ out of 6. As with other Sussex tournaments this year, it was very pleasing to see some less experienced players shine in their own tournament without having to worry about meeting the established stars. Second equal were Briony Price from Seaford and Megan Wheatley from Hurstpierpoint both with 5/6, Briony taking second place on the sum of progressive scores.
